The hotel was originally five town houses, but as early as 1791 two of those were being used as boarding houses. The building itself has many interesting features, with a variety of character rooms, a classic Georgian restaurant and lounges with open fireplaces, and a bowed landing on the staircase, designed to enable 'chairmen' to carry clients back to their rooms in their sedan chairs after a treatment in the city's famous spa baths.
